Shakespeare Weekend 2010 at The Orchard Inn

The Shakespeare Weekend at The Orchard Inn is once again in the works! Pamela Royston Macfie, Samuel R. Williamson University Professor, University of the South at Sewanee, will lead the delightfully entertaining and informative series of discussions on two of the bard’s plays and some sonnets too.

The March 19-21, 2010 weekend begins with the gracious hour Friday at 6:00 PM and an overview of Elizabethan drama. There follows dinner by reservation. Dinner at the Inn is an extraordinary experience in itself, with four courses and a mountain view to boot. Saturday morning after a scrumptious breakfast, Professor Macfie will discuss the first play (Hamlet or Twelfth Night) and adjourn before lunch. Guests have that afternoon for lunching, hiking, napping, shopping or reading. The group reconvenes about 4:30 for the second play, followed by another memorable dinner. Sonnets will be on the agenda Sunday morning after breakfast, and the weekend will close by 11 AM.

Dinner for two both evenings, breakfasts, program and one Second Floor room for two nights is $595, excluding tax and service charge. Call now for reservations!

FENCE Family Concert Plays 'Name that Tune'

Bring your family and enjoy world class music performed live in the Great Room at FENCE on the third Sunday each month. The event is free and refreshments are served.

This month's concert will add to the proceedings as the Brevard-based group "Strings Attached" will invite audience members to identify selections on the afternoon's free-form program. "Strings Attached" is a trio formed three years ago consisting of violin and guitar, and was the creation of violinist Peggy Cheathem. Repertoire ranges through pop, jazz and rock with a bit of "gypsy music" mixed in for good measure. The FENCE concert will include a number of "Name that Tune" numbers from the 1940's to the 1960's. Peggy Cheathem holds a degree in music education and performance from Converse and will be joined by guitarist Paul Jones, a graduate of the University of Florida.

If you're familiar with the intricate Texas singer/ songwriter jigsaw puzzle, you probably already know a lot about Taylor. If you're not familiar with Taylor by name, you've probably heard his songs performed by people such as Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett. He has created a multitude of fans and devotees that are legends themselves in the singer/songwriter realm, artists who have long considered Taylor to be a teacher and a lantern bearer whose time is long overdue.

The Tryon Fine Arts Center (TFAC) presents the dramatic play “Runt of the Litter” starring Bo Eason, former NFL star player on Friday, February 5 at 8:00pm at TFAC’s newly renovated theater just in time for the Super Bowl. Eason’s one-man show will inspire the audience to make their dreams a reality. “Runt of the Litter” is an unforgettable story that proves with enough determination, nothing can prevail over the human spirit. The show is generously sponsored by The North Carolina Arts Council and Watson Flooring and Appliances.

Eason gives a sexy, tough, charismatic performance of size and scope. The show cuts across all demographics and has an across-the-board appeal for everyone, from sports enthusiasts to hardcore theatre goers.

“Runt of the Litter” has the perfect message for children young and old and looks at what happens to two brothers in a family of over-achievers when their parents assure their oldest son he is destined for football stardom, while their youngest son appears too small to compete. A line in the family sand is drawn that colors the rest of their lives.

Runt of the Litter is, in fact, a semi-autobiographical account of Bo Eason's life and career as a safety for the Houston Oilers in the 1980s. His determination and killer instincts on the playing field remain the stuff of legend. His brother, Tony Eason was the quarterback who led the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl in 1986. Though resolutely American in its themes (the competitiveness and violence of sports, sibling rivalry, underdog makes good), it also contains elements of ritual theater and blood sacrifice that give the material a mythic resonance and power.

Directed by Larry Moss, “Runt of the Litter” is soon to be a major motion picture.

Eliza Lynn is a woman of enormous talent and a lyrical perspective rooted in concerns for social justice. She was born in Nashville and raised in Illinois by parents who were both amateur musicians and community activists. After graduating from college in 2000, she spent time in a Zen monastery and traveled to China before taking a job in Asheville, North Carolina with the local YWCA, where she developed a diabetes wellness program teaching exercise routines to low-income, minority residents. An accomplished musician on both banjo and guitar, Lynn’s stylistic influences range from 1940s jazz to blues and folk music.

ARMCHAIR TRAVELER TAKES A GARDEN JOURNEY TO NORMANDY, FRANCE

Come join Shields Flynn and his wife Frances of Tryon on a FENCE Armchair Travelers tour of several gardens in Normandy, France on Sunday, March 28th at 4pm.

The trip will cover six different gardens, including the house, the gardens and park of Bois des Moutiers, which was created for Guillaume Mallet in 1898 near Dieppe. The house is a classic Arts and Crafts design by Sir Edwin Lutyens and the garden plus a 45 acre woodland park was a collaboration of Gerturde Jekyll and G. Mallet.

Near Rouen is the Abby and gardens of St-George de Boscherville that was started in 1113 by Benedictine monks and later restored, starting in 1659 with the arrival of Maurist monks. The restored Abby and 17th century garden provides a beautiful example of a monastic and utilitarian garden.

The Flynns were fortunate to visit Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny (familiar to both garden and art enthusiats) the end of May. This was the peak of the Iris and Peony blossoms, and provided the opportunity to photograph the gardens filled with color.

The Town of Tryon will once again Tie-One-On when they begin their 5 or 6 year old celebration of April Fools Day. Old neck ties are strung along Trade Street to signify the kick off of the foolishness. This year's event is extra special because it is part of the celebration of Tryon's 125th anniversary.

Come to downtown Tryon on April 3rd at precisely 12:34 p.m. and can join the parade of zanies, characters and upstarts led by the King and Queen of Fools gathering at the corner of New Market and Trade St. The parade will proceed down Trade to Howard St. or at least Ola Mae Way where the Out Houses are lined up and ready to race UP Trade to Pacolet St. You don't want to miss this special event and all the fun!

64th TRHC Blockhouse Steeplechase

The Steeplechase is this area's biggest and most exciting equestrian event of the year. Join the crowds that come for the thundering of hooves as they navigate a challenging course over several races.
